Nicolas Ghesquière will present the Louis Vuitton Cruise 2020 Collection at the TWA Flight Center located at New York’s JFK Airport on May 8th, 2019.

The architectural world tour continues. After Monaco (Palace Square), Palm Springs (Bob & Dolores Estate), Brazil (Mac Niteroi), Japan (Miho Museum), and the French Riviera (Fondation Maeght), Louis Vuitton’s next Cruise Collection will be presented at the iconic 1962 TWA Flight Center in New York. Designed by the famed Finnish-American architect Eero Saarinen at the dawn of the Jet Age, the masterpiece of midcentury modern architecture is one of the world’s most imaginative airport terminals. Designated as a historic landmark and closed to the public since 2001, the TWA Flight Center will be soon reopening as the TWA Hotel. Louis Vuitton will be the first to stage an event in the restored space before it opens to the public in mid-May.

A sheer evocation of travel itself, the TWA Flight Center embodies the spirit of exploration and experimentation at the heart of Louis Vuitton’s Art of Travel and represents an ideal that closely aligns with Nicolas Ghesquière’s core inspirations.

A closer look at Nicolas Ghesquière's Fall-Winter 2019 Collection presented at the Louvre in Paris.

The vibrant “sartorial melting pot” that has emerged in the area surrounding the Centre Pompidou in Paris was Nicolas Ghesquière’s primary inspiration for his Louis Vuitton Fall-Winter Collection. Through the combination of graphic juxtapositions, the clashing of cultural references, and the multiplicity of expressions, the Artistic Director follows in the footsteps of Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers, the museum’s architects, by deliberately inviting lively debate.

Notable details include colorful re-interpretations of Louis Vuitton signatures such as with the Mini Luggage BB bag, as well as the application of the classic Monogram to novel forms as is the case with the playful Art Folder. Leather caps and flat square belt buckles on many of the models contribute to the overall celebration of the stylistic eclecticism of the decades that have passed since the Centre Pompidou’s founding in 1977.

  • WOMEN'S FALL-WINTER 2019: HIGHLIGHTS

See highlights of the Louis Vuitton Fall-Winter 2019 show that took place at the Louvre in Paris.

The Centre Pompidou Museum in Paris is an emblematic example of generational architecture, representing a captivating dialogue between a daring construction and a historic neighborhood. Since its inauguration in 1977, it deliberately invited debate, a debate which evolved with the decades that followed. The recreation of this monument to modernity for Nicolas Ghesquière's Fall-Winter 2019 Show pays homage to the clash of the old with the now, a signature preoccupation of Louis Vuitton’s Artistic Director.

The Collection that was presented against this backdrop speaks to a vision of fashion that is sure of its potential and knows with conviction how to proceed. The enthusiasm of youth creates a foundation of stylistic certainty. Nicolas Ghesquière described the Centre Pompidou and surrounding area as “a fascinating incubator of a neighborhood. An incredible mélange, converging in the epicenter. The cliques, the styles, the life… I love that impression of a sartorial melting pot. Today, I’ve transposed it at Louis Vuitton: a House of multiple expressions."

  • WOMEN'S FALL-WINTER 2019: MUSEUM WITHIN MUSEUM

The Centre Pompidou in Paris was recreated within the Cour Carrée of the Louvre for the Louis Vuitton Fall-Winter 2019 Fashion Show.

From within one iconic cultural institution, another rises for a finite moment in time. The concept of Nicolas Ghesquière’s Louis Vuitton Women’s Fall-Winter 2019 Fashion Show alludes to the idea of being a “museum within a museum”. Located in the Cour Carrée of the Musée du Louvre in Paris, the interior and exterior scenography references the architecture of the Centre Pompidou which sits only a kilometer away. Designed by Renzo Piano and Richard Rogers and inaugurated in 1977, the multicultural venue rapidly became one of the most recognizable and popular modern monuments despite the considerable controversy surrounding it.

Today, the building is considered an emblem of 20th-century architecture, boasting a series of technical characteristics that make it unique in the world. With the bold conviction that an institution is also a cultural machine, the Centre Pompidou both literally and figuratively inverts the traditional structures to bring the inside out and outside in. What would normally be hidden from the public has been instead brought out and made visible with a simple color code: green for circulating water, blue for air, yellow for electricity, and red for the humans. At the Centre Pompidou, as in fashion, everything’s a matter of flow.
